Please note that the pre-conference and educational courses are not included in the SIOP congress registration fees (except SIOP Education Course on October 3, 2008). Attendance will be limited and advance registration is required. Each course (except SIOP Education Course on October 3, 2008) requires a minimum number of participants. If the minimum is not reached until an appropriate time period prior to the meeting, the course in question will be cancelled.

MRD (2 days Course - October 2+3, 2008) Further Information
Target Group: biologists, medical scientists, technical assistants
Prerequisites: Interest and opportunity to measure MRD in the own laboratory;
especially in connection to a clinical protocol with and without pre-experiences.

Description: Currently most implemented techniques for minimal residual quantification in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia: Multicolor flow cytometry and PCR based T-cell receptor/Immuno-globulin gene rearrangements. Background, applicability, feasibility, potential and limitations of both techniques; clinical application in ALL frontline and relapse protocols, usage for treatment stratification, methodological and clinical case reports

Psycho Oncology

Description: 1. Communication at the different developmental stages of childhood
The importance of good and effective communication skills in ensuring that patients receive the highest possible quality of care is recognised. The course deals in particular with the challenge of good communication with children at different ages.
2. “Breaking bad news”
How bad news is presented may affect patients' comprehension of and adjustment to the news as well as their satisfaction with their professional staff. This course outlines a pathway for professional staff to deliver bad news to patients, clients, their families and
carers.
3. Neuropsychological assessment and intervention
Neuropsychological evaluation of children and adolescents with cancer is an important intervention for many patients at different stages of their disease or medical treatment, for good and effective neuropsychological assessment, counselling and intervention is the basis for satisfying neurocognitive outcome. The course gives an overview of assessment and intervention.
4. Psychosocial intervention strategies
This course gives an overview of common psychosocial intervention strategies in the field of paediatric psycho oncology.

Hematologic Malignancies - Morphology and Revised WHO Classification Further information
Target Group: physicians, residents in the field of paediatric oncology
Prerequisites: interest in peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology
Description: The course includes short presentations concerning the theory of morphological evaluation of peripheral blood and bone marrow, ranging from a general introduction to the different hematological malignancies. The importance of bone marrow biopsies is also presented. Several examples and case reports are shown. A microscope and interesting slides are placed at the single participant’s disposal. Tutors are available for assistance.
