Registration to SIOP 2008 is now only possible at the registration desk at the Estrel Hotel & Convention Center in Berlin from October 3 – 6, 2008.
Berlin has been elected as the venue of the 40th Annual Meeting of SIOP. It will be a great pleasure to welcome you to our city. We will organise a challenging and exciting scientific congress together with the SIOP Board and the Scientific Committee. The SIOP Annual Meetings are the most significant scientific and educational events for paediatric oncology worldwide where physicians of all disciplines co-operating in the research and treatment of childhood cancer, but also scientists, psychologists, nurses, parents and former patients meet and discuss novel developments.
The motto of this year’s meeting is “Care and Cure – New Horizons”. Thus, we would like to highlight new perspectives for the future. More specific targeted drugs using knowledge obtained by molecular biology studies of cancer have been developed during the past years. Furthermore, according to recent legislation, Europe after the US has become the second largest region with legislation aimed at strengthening and improving paediatric pharmaceutical research. This will offer new prospects and perspectives for children and adolescents with cancer. Other legislative measures concerning the role of paediatric oncology nurses will change the working situation in our hospitals.
16 years after the first SIOP annual meeting was held in Germany, Berlin will host the second meeting in our country. The city has continuously been changing into an international metropolis since the reunification of Germany in 1990 when Berlin became the capital city of the Federal Republic of Germany. With a population of 3.4 million within its city limits, Berlin is Germany’s largest city, and the second most populous city in the European Union. Located in Northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan area, which is home to 4.9 million people from over 180 nations. At the geographical centre of a growing Europe, Berlin is the gateway between East and West. The city has a plethora of cultural attractions: museums and galleries, theatres and operas, cinemas and concert halls, scene clubs and restaurants. The city has risen to the urban and environmental challenges of rebuilding itself. You will be intrigued by the remains from an uncertain and moving past which can be seen all over the city.
We will make every effort to make your participation at the 40th Annual SIOP Meeting and your visit to Berlin knowledge enhancing and unforgettable.
Looking forward to welcoming you to Berlin in 2008
